- 'This is exactly what Christianity sets you free from. Being a Christian is not about being ‘good’, it’s about Jesus being good for us. He died so we might be free, not just from the consequences of our sin but from the guilt and shame that it brings. '

Yes, yes.
God's 100% Human and 100% God son 'Jesus' spilled all his (physical) blood to wash away the sin of mankind (conceptual, abstract idea), but you have to believe it works or it doesn't work for you.

Most of us have here been told this story before we could even read, so it's safe to assume that we understand the concept of Christianity.

"because I no longer felt the weight a Christian carries. The weight of guilt, unworthiness and fear of god’s judgement."

This wasn't the Top 20 reasons you shouldn't believe in Jesus. I could easily build a strong historical and scientific case against religion. I wasn't trying to convince you or anyone else.

These were the thoughts and questions that started my de-conversion from Christianity. Being a heavily indoctrinated believer, my initial reasons had more to do with coming to terms with the absurd god I worshiped and theology I practiced. It was later that this de-conversion was solidified by common sense and the mountain of scientific evidence.

I understand some Atheist arguments but the majority of these were some of the worst I've ever heard. Plus, out of your "Top 20" quite a few basically said the same thing, about how God was unjust and cruel. Did you run out of reasons?

Just saying, if I choose to remain an atheist, but still end up leading a morally upright life - a better one than many "Christians" lead - and God still sends me to hell simply because I refused to worship him, I don't think that type of deity deserves my respect at all.
And I totally agree on the bit about prayer being useless - if it really did work, then why haven't the children in 3rd world nations been saved yet? The Bible explicitly states that God has special relations with both children AND the poverty-stricken. The starving children all over the world clearly fit both categories - and due to the amount of Church missions and organizations setting up camp over there, I'm pretty sure it's these children that pray the most and the most sincerely. So, why do they still die on a daily basis, with no hope for survival at all? Don't tell me that "their reward is in heaven"; and if you say that little children suffering and dying is part of God's ultimate plan, this is one God that does not deserve my respect at all.

I had a whole long thing written out but it seems pointless. All I want to say is if you are being honest with your self about this change than your emotions in that comment are betraying you. If you had some sort of epiphany that led to this great shift at the core of your morality it would seem your mind would need to open further and expand. However, in your speech it sounds like it shut tight completely. If you are going to run with the atheism flag (and thats your business) please don't degrade the very people you were one of for 30 years. Furthermore, all the Christians who read this should take this statement to heart as well. Saying someone else's beliefs systems are "absurd" and such is just ignorant whether or not they are Christian, atheists, agnostic, Islamic, what have you.

The only thing I will say is that you didnt refute my points much at all except to criticize me for my beliefs and from all the literature I have read atheists have been trying to be free of the exact same criticism from Christians forever. It doesn't look good when Christians do it and it doesn't when you do either. We don't need to get mad to have an actual discussion about the points I put out for you. ; ) Sorry it got long AGAIN.

This list is a very condensed and simplified look at why I walked away from Christianity. Don't worry SipSop, I won't "waver" and start believing in invisible beings again.

I've studied the Bible very thoroughly, and I absolutely understand what faith means. I practiced faith for over 30 years of my life. Only my perspective of faith has changed.

Faith is weakness. It's not based in hope, it's based in fear. It's not based in reason, it's based in absurd ancient folklore. We have come to far as a civilization to give credibility to something so ludicrous. No one knows if there is a god/creator. But the one described in the Bible is as primitive as the men who invented him.

Hey man I completely respect your right and need to believe what you will and to be happy in your life, but based on your reasons for leaving the faith (and I only read the first 10 before you lost me) you weren't digging too deeply into the Bible to begin with. "God works in mysterious ways" is something Christians who don't have any answers tell people because they don't read the Bible either. At what point in the Bible did God cause anything a person may cause an attrocity without a specific puprose? Take for example sodom and gomorrah, from the outside this may seem like a pointless demolition of an entire city of people but God had a reason and it was clearly stated in the Bible as was the flood, the enslavement of isreal, etc....if YOU don't have faith that since the adding of material to the Bible was closed but time presses on that God still doesn't have reasons for his decisions that is up to you, but to say that these sorts of things happening in the world are new and that they are pointless from a Christian stance is flawed.
Furthermore, you mentioned Gods inability to appear/speak to you twice in the first 10 reasons. However, if you looked at the Bible again and considered for a moment how few people God ever spoke directly to or (especially) appeared to during the OT you'd realize that we only have those stories because they are about the lives of the most important people of Jewish history, it is not surprising that God never specifically spoken to you unless you believe God has some mission or purpose that you are to accomplish that is greater than that of say Moses.
On a similar note, and this is one atheists love but it really doesn't make sense to say to a christian, you ask why God doesn't appear to people. Again, even moses only saw the back of God. Also, put yourself in the position of being God. All you ask of your people is to be obedient and believe in him with a loving heart THROUGH FAITH. If God appeaerd on CNN tonight and performed a miracle everyone would believe in God. There would be no question and no need for faith. Salvation would be unnecessary and we would have never had any free will from the very beginning. That entire argument is the most flawed and pointless one that I see atheists make. The entire point of our religion is that we CHOOSE to follow God WITHOUT proof that is the enitre shebang. That is faith and faith couldn't exist if there were no reason to doubt.
Again you need to believe whatever you believe and thats a good thing, but the reasons you've listed here seem to show that you may waiver in that decision because you haven't consider many points, or even the information that is stated blatently in the Bible you used to follow.
