Former Southern Baptist Convention officer Wiley Drake claimed on Fox News Radio that he is praying “imprecatory prayer” against Obama. In other words, he is praying for God to kill President Obama.
Drake said on “The Alan Colmes Show” that unless Obama repents, he is praying that God will kill the president. He believes that is what happened to slain abortion provider George Tiller. It worked on Tiller, why not the president?
Drake acknowledged:
“It is a fringe point of view, and I take that as a badge of honor. I am on the fringe.”
Drake said Southern Baptists have lost belief in “imprecatory prayer” – praying passages from the Psalms where the Psalmist is asking God to bring death and misfortune on his enemies – and need to regain the practice.
“It is in the Bible, and we are proud to say as Southern Baptists that we believe the Book,” he said. “You’ve got to believe the whole Book, brother, or you don’t believe any of it.”
Another shining moment for the Bible. A bigot using the Bible to justify his hate campaign. Why can’t Drake be arrested as an accessory to conspire murder?

If there is no God then Wiley Drake is just a voodoo witch doctor sticking pins into dolls. He could only be an accessory to murder if there was provable cause and effect to his prayers.
A bigot using the Bible to justify hate is easy to identify. But it would seem to be the bigot and not the Bible that is the problem.
June 5, 2009 at 8:13 am |
The Bible is the problem because you can pick and choose the verses to justify your agenda. The book is so ridiculously inconsistent and conflicting, you could justify almost anything.
June 8, 2009 at 8:48 pm |
Don’t blame a book of myths just because some bozos think those myths are real.
June 9, 2009 at 8:09 pm |
So absent the Bible a bigot would not hate?
I doubt it.
June 9, 2009 at 8:16 pm
He would still be a bigot. The Bible just helps him justify his actions.
June 10, 2009 at 2:40 am
Bigots are taught to be bigots and the bible believers tend to be just more so then non believers. Like theBEattitude said they justify it using the bible. You take away that and some but not many wouldn’t have a reason to be bigots.
June 10, 2009 at 3:20 am
I used to be an Evangelical Christian, and was taught that what the Bible said was God`s Truth, so I too was bogotted, and fairly extreme like this guy! It was not an attitude that came naturally to me, as I am by nature a very tolerant, laid back sort of person, who gets on well with everyone – even those whom others often find quite objectionable (lol) so don`t tell ME that the Bible (and other archaic religious garbage) is not responsible for this mindless bigotry, because I don`t buy it!!!
July 13, 2009 at 7:48 pm |
This is sooo true. I really hate it when people use the Bible as an excuse for hate…..This man thinks that President Obama is a “murderer”, so what does that make him for
praying for God to kill him?
June 4, 2009 at 11:48 pm |
The collection plates make sense now. I guess the prayer bit is… what, maybe he likes His ego stroked while He does His thing?
June 5, 2009 at 12:21 am |
Why don’t these nuts realize that it was their all powerful God that allowed Obama to get elected in the first place???? (I’m sure they were payin’ for Palin, but it didn’t work, so maybe they just had oughta stand back and let God run our government the way he sees fit.)
June 5, 2009 at 12:33 am |
In my last comment, “payin’” should have read “prayin’.”
This post crystallizes exactly what I find so objectionable about American right-wing Christianity. If God is so powerful, then why does he depend on these dolt’s “imprecatory” prayers to decide what actions to take? What gives these geniuses the right to decide that God was wrong in allowing Obama to get elected or in allowing Tiller to perform abortions for years and years? There is absolutely NO HUMILITY when these dopes think that they need to help God call the shots–especially considering their horrible past track record in announcing what God “wants” to happen (i.e., a McCain-Palin victory, the end to legal abortion, Kurt Warner’s team winning the Super Bowl).
June 5, 2009 at 1:38 am |
Okay, imprecatory, sure. But that can be any sort of ill will. It’s not like he actually called for Obama to die, right?
*click the link*
Aw, crap.
So does this mean the Secret Service is gonna have to keep an eye on God, now? And how does one investigate someone whose existence can’t even be verified?
June 5, 2009 at 3:04 am |
The same people that do these types of things would have wanted the Secret Service called on anyone saying the same things about Bush. If he really believes that his or others praying for the death of Tiller is true, doesn’t that mean he or them are accessory to the murder? I wonder how they would react to being arrested as accessory to murder charges?
June 5, 2009 at 3:24 am |
facepalm.jpg
June 5, 2009 at 4:01 am |
There is no “Imprecatory” prayer made against someone in leadership over the prayee in Psalms (granted David was the king).
Mr. Drake could Biblically pray against Osama, but Obama would be out of step with King David’s example.
This may be the only time I agree with what you have to say.
June 5, 2009 at 8:17 am |
Christian hypocrisy is an evil we can all agree on. Unfortunately it is in the news on a daily basis.
June 5, 2009 at 4:41 am |
This provides the moderate Christians about which we hear so much with another excellent opportunity to speak out against Christian extremism.
June 5, 2009 at 4:47 am |
I wonder which has better odds? Moderate christians speaking out against christian extremist or the people of the world really wanting peace.
June 5, 2009 at 7:53 am |
The word fringe appears in only three verses in the King James Bible, Num 15:38-39 and Deut 22:12.
That’s three more verses than the word “trinity.”
June 5, 2009 at 7:57 am |
Wiley Drake: “You’ve got to believe the whole Book, brother, or you don’t believe any of it.”
I have trouble believing that insects have four legs, that rabbits chew their cuds, and that you can breed animals with stripes by putting sticks in their watering trough. I guess I may as well not bother with the rest.
June 5, 2009 at 2:28 pm |
Of course insects have four legs, Reginald, just like the Bible says. They have four legs , and another two as well! I don`t see any inaccuracy there!!
June 5, 2009 at 4:01 pm |
Since it is phrased as “all four,” it is wrong.
Lev 11:
20) All fowls that creep, going upon all four, shall be an abomination unto you.
Name one?
21) Yet these may ye eat of every flying creeping thing that goeth upon all four, which have legs above their feet, to leap withal upon the earth;
Legs above the feet? What doesn’t?
22) Even these of them ye may eat; the locust after his kind, and the bald locust after his kind, and the beetle after his kind, and the grasshopper after his kind.
Right. So you can eat these things even though they “goeth about on all four.”
23) But all other flying creeping things, which have four feet, shall be an abomination unto you.
Such as?
June 5, 2009 at 4:24 pm
I wasn`t being serious!!!
June 8, 2009 at 1:48 pm
Praying mantises always were the godliest of the insects.
June 12, 2009 at 10:22 pm
Legs above the feet? What doesn’t?
Snails and slugs (gastropods: literally “stomach-foot”).
Regarding feet without legs; not that they fit the category, having only one foot apiece and not doing much flying.
June 10, 2009 at 7:28 am |
As a lonely Christian voice I must add:
maybe the insects have evolved to have 6 legs since Leviticus. oh no, wait… that’s a counter-productive to the other argument! damn it!
This guy’s a wing-nut. Thanks for the post.
June 10, 2009 at 7:50 am

June 5, 2009 at 9:00 am |
I just love that he sounds like a villain from an old black and white movie. Wiley Drake!
June 5, 2009 at 2:37 pm |
Mental hospitals are full of people who were “on the fringe”, and took that as “a badge of honour”! How come this man`s sanity is not being questioned publicly? This is the most disturbing thing that I have read for some time, as this guy is obviously a prominent Southern Baptist, so I guess a lot of other “Christians” are in full agreement with him. And as for saying in the link that he is glad that a fellow human being is dead – well, words fail me for once!!
June 5, 2009 at 2:53 pm |
Since the bible is not credible and prayer never has worked, that takes all the meaning out of what this dumbo, Wiley Drake has said.
Xtians will always stand up some dick head and get them to say silly things. Kirk Cameron, Ray Comfort, Pat Robertson and the late but not great, Jerry Falwell all fall in this category.
It will take a while for all these loonies to die off and then reality will reign.
June 5, 2009 at 3:00 pm |
You don`t really believe that there isn`t another generation of mindless bigots waiting in the wings to take over from these dinosaurs, do you Aspentroll? And as for “all the meaning” being taken out of these words by cool reflection on reality, does it not occur to you that some dumbass fundamentalist lunatic is just as likely, on hearing this, to try to assassinate the President because he believes that he is carrying out “The Will of God”?!!
June 6, 2009 at 6:37 am |
barriejohn,
You, sir, are a little too good at satirical comments.
June 6, 2009 at 1:12 pm
Hmmm… Is it actually possible to be TOO GOOD at something? I`ll have to give that one some thought!
June 5, 2009 at 3:19 pm |
He should be arrested for inciting killing of a peaceful man! He sounds completely weird and illogic! Obama is the best thing that happened to America and to the whole world. We should keep him safe and follow him as much as we can.
June 5, 2009 at 3:22 pm |
Why do these religions breed so much hatred? Is it just the Christians / Muslims? I don’t often hear such hatred from Jewish or Buddhist followers.
June 6, 2009 at 12:05 pm |
Maybe its because the Bible is the Bestseller, which Christianity is the fastest spreading religion (:
June 5, 2009 at 4:04 pm |
Why couldn’t these prayers have been said when W was in office??
June 5, 2009 at 5:18 pm |
I did say them. Once again, prayer failed me.
June 6, 2009 at 1:19 am |
Prayer NEVER fails BEattitude! We`ve been through all this before, but you never seem to learn!! Maybe you just weren`t praying in accordance with God`s will: or maybe He had some valuable lesson He wanted to teach you to make you a much better person: or maybe your prayers were answered, but in a way that you don`t understand – though in a much better way than you could ever have imagined: or maybe……

June 6, 2009 at 12:07 pm |
The Bible says that the wisest of the human wisdom is still, being seen as foolishness in God’s eyes. And that true wisdom only comes from God. Why doubt God’s ability to love just because a man?
June 6, 2009 at 1:26 pm |
Of course it will say things like that. How do you control people if you tell them that wisdom is where the answers are. If you tell people that any wisdom they have is foolish and they believe you then you control them. Wisdom comes from education not ignorance as you stand for.
June 6, 2009 at 1:43 pm |
I believe you`re alluding to I Cor. 1:18-31 here. It was drummed into me when I was a young Christian that “God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise” etc, but you just couldn`t fail to notice that all the most prominent conference and convention speakers, and all the most popular writers in evangelical circles, were men of outstanding intellect! However misguided they were, THESE were the people that the Christian community were taking notice of, not the uneducated and intellectually challenged artisans!!
June 6, 2009 at 10:57 pm |
I don’t doubt God because of a man. I doubt the Christian god because of the poorly authored book written by men.
The Bible’s highly conflicting and flawed teaching is demonstrated by men like Drake that successfully use these inconsistent teachings to justify evil actions and words.
June 6, 2009 at 8:46 pm |
“Since the bible is not credible and prayer never has worked, that takes all the meaning out of what this dumbo, Wiley Drake has said.”
Unfortunately, no. Here’s how it works. Wiley Drake rails against Obama and prays for his death. Nutjob Shitforbrains hears this and decides that he is God’s Instrument. Hopefully, Nutjob is too stupid to succeed, but if he does, Wiley “Coyote” Drake shouts out, “He acted alone!”, and skates off into the sunset without so much as a Daffy Duck “Woo-hoo!”
It’s not so much about the message as it is the empty vessel you can pour it into.
June 7, 2009 at 10:49 am |
That’s so disturbing! WTF – it’s like the pro-lifer who kills to make a point. Again, WTF?!
June 7, 2009 at 3:24 pm |
Very amusing, what ever this guy say or even believe is on him. And no matter this Former Southern Baptists guy pray God Does not answer prayer like this thing is praying for. it will be a contradiction to Gods words where he commands to love your enamy, bless those who curse you, and above all He command to pray for those in authority over you. and DOES NOT SAY PRAY FOR THIER DEATH, ALL THE BIBLE VERSES ARE FOR EVERYONE THAT BELIVE IT, BUT NOT ALL THE BIBLE VERSES APLY TO EVERY ONE THAT BELIEVE IT.
AND AS FAR AS PRAYING GOES I WILL BE PRAYING THAT GOD RETURN YOU(theBEattitude)BACK TO HIM AND HEAL YOUR BROKEN HEART.
June 7, 2009 at 5:24 pm |
There you are BEattitude – because you are now thinking logically and rationally you`ve obviously got a “broken heart”! Sad, isn`t it?
June 8, 2009 at 7:53 am |
Yes, very said. In order for my religious heart to be healthy, my brain has to be broken.
June 10, 2009 at 10:53 pm |
No, thinking logiclly is fine, but I guarantee that at one point the BEattitude heart was hurt so bad that all the blame had to go to God.
Now it is so typical of all you radicals to only respond to only one line of my reply, and agnore the rest, which is fine for Christianity as a whole is been uner attack since before Jesus was born.
No one is talking about the muslem murder that just murdered one ogf our fine deffenders and had B…s to say it was justified killing.
Murder is murder, or you have a diffrent level of it?
I am praying for you
THAT GOD RETURN YOU(theBEattitude)BACK TO HIM AND HEAL YOUR BROKEN, and Hurt HEART, and may you come home, for even the servent of our father eat better than this.
thanks
wdednh
June 11, 2009 at 5:55 am
wdenh said “No, thinking logiclly is fine, but I guarantee that at one point the BEattitude heart was hurt so bad that all the blame had to go to God.”
I know this might be a new accusation for you, wdenh, but it gets pretty old for some of us. Personally, people have been throwing that accusation at me for far too long, but I can’t speak for the BEattitude.
I loved being a Christian and had mostly positive experiences. Nearly all of my closest friends are Christians, my fiance is a Christian, many of my family members are Christians. I was not hurt, nor was I angry. I was frustrated because it seemed the more I sought God, the less he seemed real, and that is why I no longer call myself a Christian, or even a theist of any kind.
June 11, 2009 at 7:52 am
Mike covered this well, but I’d just like to add that this sort of assumption is insulting.
You’re telling, not just theBEattitude, but pretty much anyone who’s an atheist that their decision couldn’t possibly have been made out of a rational process. When you say things like this, the assumption is that you can’t possibly be wrong and atheists can’t possibly be right.
That may very well be what you believe, but it’s rather arrogant, wouldn’t you say?

Christian extremism is no better or worse than any other form of extremism. I left the Southern Baptist Convention (and associated churches) years ago because of people like Wiley Drake, both in Leadership positions and in the Pews. A Hypocrite is a Hypocrite, a Murderer is a Murderer, a Self-Righteous Prick is a Self-Righteous Prick and I got tired of the per-capita number of these people that exist in the Baptist church. The SBC and Wiley Drake are calling fire down on their heads. God is very unlikely to answer any prayers that are generated by hatred. However, God might change the Leadership of the SBC and change the hearts of any group who asks for the death of the President. And when God makes dramatic moves they are irresistable. I will just call Wiley Drake a Nutjob and allow God to deal with him. For The Record: If it wasen’t for this few minutes of fame on the internet Wiley Drake would be off the radar, now we have to listen for the thud when other Nutjobs pick up on this bit of NON-News and make it their rallying cry. God preserve us from people who use HIS name to further THEIR agendas. Those of you who have read the Bible will already know what is in store for them. God does not take this lightly. God will respond in kind in His own time. My strongest suspicion is that Mr. Obama will come under Divine Protection and no person of group will be able to get to him. That is MY prayer.
June 8, 2009 at 7:58 am |
“Divine Protection” doesn’t exist. If it does, I’d like to know God’s selection process when he allows little children to be molested and abused.
Is it something like that scene in Pulp Fiction where God came down from heaven and stopped the bullets?

Current Baptist & born again ‘Christians’ have ruined the Christian religion for any serious practitioner. These right wing-nuts do not even pretend to follow Biblical teachings anymore, but want THEIR way to be THE way. If there IS a God, he is the One destroying the GOP that cannot separate religion from government. Whilst they condemn Islam they strive to do the SAME THING here in the name of God! When anyone sets out to ‘make things happen’ to others, they have LOST their way. We all need to improve ourselves & let others do the same! When preachers preach that we ‘do not know the ways of God’…that includes the fact that their God has allowed the socially conscience political party to succeed just as Jesus did in the New Testament…do unto others what you would want done to you!
June 10, 2009 at 5:30 am |
I use to be a Southern Baptist. I’m so glad that I grew up and shook off the 17 years of what rightfully amounted to brainwashing.
They use their pulpit to spew hatred and intolerance.
June 10, 2009 at 7:54 am |
I hope you`re not implying here that it is necessary, or even preferable, to have an organized religion just to teach this basic philosophy of life, zada!

I didn`t mean to detract from your comment there, Chika. I absolutely agree with you. Why on earth do governments and the media take these people seriously, and give them the aura of respectability? Over here in the UK we have Roman Catholic Archbishops, whose institutions have just been found to be responsible for the most appalling child abuse (both sexual and physical) over many years, all covered up for the sake of the reputation of the Church, agitating for more state money to be spent on the setting up of so-called “faith schools”, and angling to get seats in the House of Lords! We have a saying here: “You couldn`t make it up”!!

Bible Shmible! I am so tired of all of these “purists” who claim their flawed bible only speaks “Truth”! ha ha ha! After many translations what thread of the “Bible” is true? Their are many passages of the bible that are in contradiction. Get a life!

OK, so I’m a non-believer but I’ll go ahead and give it a try. Gawd, please do the whole world a favor and pop a blood clot in Wiley Drake’s head. Cocksuckers like this are a blight on humanity and we would be better off without this asshole. Amen.

The spirit of the serpent, (Smiley Snake), rises out of the dust and spits its venom, writhing in the anguish of its own fate.

Wow. This is the first time Jesus has ever spoken directly to me. You need to update your Gravatar to an accurate Caucasian, blue-eyed picture of yourself.

Barack Hussein Obama is a Racist, Anti-God, Anti-Christian, Liar and a Baby killer and should be IMPEACHED.

It’s funny how extremists love to mention Obama’s middle name.
Impeached? Because you don’t like him? It is people like you, Tony, that make me very glad I live in a free democracy. Right wing extremists seem to not understand that their hate mongering only hurts their cause. You don’t have to agree with Obama, but hate and slander will get you nowhere.
You and your buddy Wiley Drake can pray for Obama’s death. Prayer is powerful, who knows what could happen.

1. Obama is NOT a muslim.
2. The baby killing was started by W., Obama has vowed to stop it.
3. Religion in all it`s forms was invented by smart people in order to control dumbasses who might not act the way the smart people wanted them to.
4. The dumbasses are now running the asylum, as the smart people have a new God called MONEY.
5. Hatred, racism, bigotry, call it what you want, morons like Wiley want to be BETTER than someone. [Probably something to do with the assholes who raised him]
6. Anyone who believes that this mess we call planet earth is anything other than a cosmic accident should count themselves among the dumbasses.

HATE is NOT a “Christian value”…. the man is no Christian… he’s not following Jesus teachings, nor his example. The man is a charlatan and a hate-monger…. the furthest thing from Jesus or his teachings possible. Jesus never said “worship me”… he said “follow me” and then proceeded to give all that he had and all that he was for the benefit of others…. something so foreign to what is described here that it doesn’t even belong in the same universe.
Once again I will find myself apologizing to Jesus before bed tonight, for all the bullshit perpetrated in his name while being wholly antithetical to anything he ever said or did.

Once a month or so, I`m drawn back to this page to read the comments on this inane subject. Some are intelligent and thoughtful, most are wise-ass, and some undoubtedly meet the approval of ol` Wiley himself. For this shit-head to garner so much attention for his imbecilic views, WE must participate! Okay, I`m unable to control myself, here`s some more love, Wiley.
Jesus, the founder of this religion that spawns so many complete and utter assholes, was JUST A GUY! A smart, gentle, sweetheart of a guy who wanted only to reform the Jewish faith into a democratic institution, much as Wesley tried to do with the catholic faith 1500 years later. He had no intention of starting CHRISTIANITY! It was the troop of followers he assembled that were responsible for that.
You see, the Jews have always had the messiah myth as a part of their religion, and during the time that Jesus was among them, there were approximately 500 OTHER claimants to the title wandering around the holy land, preaching the gospel according to them, and trying to convince the populace that THEY were the Messiah!
Part of the messiah myth is the myriad miracles that the genuine article will perform [yes, every one of the New Testament miracles is included]
and most of these Messiah wannabes were practicing magicians as well as preachers. [Chris ANGEL?]
Jesus had the advantages of 1.Being the best magician, 2.The best preacher, with the best ideas, & 3.Having the most zealous followers who unashamedly hyped these sleight-of-hand tricks into the required miracles.
One must remember, Jesus himself wrote not one word of the New Testament, it was all written by others after his death, and I suspect that he would be embarrassed by the claims they made.
Ever since his death, his teachings have been distorted and adulterated by power-hungry men who wanted to cash in on the faith of his followers.
Enter Wiley Drake and thousands of other con-men.
From Jimmy Swaggart, who likes the occasional blow-job from hookers,[Ahhhh have sinned!], Oral Roberts, who once told his t.v. audience that God had informed him that if he failed to raise $6million dollars in one week, He, God, would “call me home”, to Pat Roberts, who said a few years back that God had declared that he would be president, [he actually got some votes], the christian religion has been fraught with immorality, conniving greed, and outright debauchery.
This latest racist, immoral, conniving, power-mad asshole is just another link in that chain.
