U.S. money trusts God. Why does English money trust Darwin?

By theBEattitude

10 dollars vs. 10 pounds.

Darwin will always win that battle considering he actually existed.

Currency’s a bad example to use for the purposes of this blog. Bear in mind that the entire financial system is based purely on paper collateral for material goods.

Worse, in certain countries, its either paper collateral for PART of a material good, OR it’s paper collateral for ANOTHER paper collateral.

As much as economists, businessmen and the financial sector would like to persuade you otherwise, the entire global financial market requires as much faith as worshipping God.

(And that, folks, is how In God We Trust got there on the American Dollar.)

The fact that we now cannot do without money is a stark reminder of why we should never let zealots run the world, really. =.=

You don’t find it odd that a country with the separation of church and state still has “In God We Trust” on its currency? Which god does the United States trust? If I put my trust in God, will he make me financially richer?

The statement should have been removed from our currency a long time ago.

It should have never been added but as with many things that shouldn’t happen, it was done in a time where fear was higher then normal.

Well, it’s just about as odd as Chinese coins depicting a hell lotta feng shui stuff and using design concepts based on superstition. You have a few of the old ones, you know what I’ll mean.

(In any case, seeing China’s current influence and the influence the states once had, I would think it actually works.

For a limited time only, of course. >_>)

I’m cool with both, although I understand why it is offensive to you atheists. I love the picture of Darwin on the English…..never even noticed that when I was there!

    • Shawn Says:

I wouldn’t say we find it offensive. Most of us find that it violates the whole separation of church and state and the secular values that the nation was founded on. It was brought in and placed on our money in the 50’s as a propaganda piece against our enemies, the Godless Russian Communists.

I know it is such a small thing. In God we trust, one nation under God and so on. These are small things. But, as with everything else, if you give an inch they will take a mile. Religion is being forced down our throats at all turns, and God on our money and in our pledge was just the inch they needed.

And its not just a universal God, no it is the Christian God. Ten Commandments in court houses, nativity scenes on government property and so on. I don’t think I have ever seen a Hindu scene on public land during the festival of Deepavali. I have never seen anything related to the prophet Muhammad during Idul Fitri or Idul Adah. I could go on with plenty of examples from other religions. If the right extended to ALL religions then we might be more accepting, but it doesn’t.

Now they want to teach creationism and abstinence in public schools. Public schools are run by the government and must remain secular. Religion has no place in a place in public schools. Religion should be taught in church, temple, mosque or where ever you worship and in your own home. If you want it taught in school then send your kids to a private school and pay for that type of education. Keep it out of the public schools. If you think teaching kids about sex is wrong, then remove your kids from sex education class, but don’t forbid others from getting much needed education because YOU don’t agree with it. That is just stupid and wrong. Especially when America has the highest teenage birth rates in the developed world and is also the most religious. Shouldn’t that be the other way around??

Next thing, and it won’t be far off, is you wont be allowed to work in certain jobs unless you are Christian, trust me it isn’t far away if the the right have anything to do with it. And it will just get worse from there. This has got to stop.

So yes, get God off our money, out of our pledge and out of our schools. Do it now before Land of the Free and Home of the Brave turns into Land of the Christians Zealots and Home of the enslaved infidels. (And by infidels I mean those who believe anything other than in the Christian God, or believe in nothing)

Everything you say is right Shawn – a great post – and I don`t think it is a “small thing” at all!

  6. George Says:

Well, Americans do not have to go far to find God, because they got him in their pockets ! Nice one Beattitude !!!

  7. barriejohn Says:

We have featured various Britons of note on our currency, like Charles Dickens, Elizabeth Fry, George Stevenson, Florence Nightingale, barriejohn and so on, but I understand that Darwin was chosen because of the difficulty of forging his beard!! Must be the Origin of the Specie !!!!!

    • barriejohn Says:

PS I should have put “Britons of note” in inverted commas really: it`s a bit late here now!

  8. Matt Oxley Says:

whats really funny is that the value of the dollar has been plummeting ever since that phrase was placed on it.

oh, and soon after the phrase was put on the dollar bill (and other paper money) the fed destroyed silver/gold certificates and created the Federal Reserve Note…which is backed by nothing other than a promise…which is when the value really started getting nasty….so really…the dollar is currently worth slightly more than god, but not by much.
