The God of the Bible is pro-abortion.

This is the fourteenth chapter in the series My List: Believe the Bible? Read why I started this list in About Me.

God on abortion and baby killing:

God will punish women by aborting their fetus through a miscarriage.

Give them, O LORD–what will You give? Give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts.

Hosea 9:14

God teaches the use of a bizarre ritual using cursed “bitter water” to abort a fetus who was conceived through infidelity.

Numbers 5:11-21

God orders Moses to kill every Midianite woman who was no longer a virgin. (many of these women would obviously have been pregnant)

Numbers 31:15-18

God promises to destroy the infants of Samaria and rip open the stomachs of pregnant women.

The people of Samaria must bear their guilt, because they have rebelled against their God. They will fall by the sword; their little ones will be dashed to the ground, their pregnant women ripped open.

Hosea 13:16

God allows the pregnant women of Tappuah to be ripped open.

At that time Menahem, starting out from Tirzah, attacked Tiphsah and everyone in the city and its vicinity, because they refused to open their gates. He sacked Tiphsah and ripped open all the pregnant women.

2 Kings 15:16

God commands the killing of infants and nursing babies.

Now go and attack Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and do not spare them. But kill both man and woman, infant and nursing child, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.

1 Samuel 15:3

God repays your enemies by destroying their babies.

Happy is he who repays you for what you have done to us. He who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks.

Psalms 137:8-9

Apparently all life is precious to the god of the Bible, unless it is a fetus conceived out of wedlock or conception happens within an “enemy” nation that does not worship him. The Bible teaches that abortion is acceptable if God performs it or he commands it to be done through contaminated water or by violent force. The Bible doesn’t really specify on the modern surgical method of abortion.

Just to be clear, this post is not my attempt to make a political statement about my position on abortion. Only to show how ridiculous it is to hold up the Bible as proof of the value of human life. Being the father of two children, you don’t have to convince me of the value of human life.

You can be a pro-life supporter, but leave your Bible at home. It’s horrific and violent stories against innocent infants and unborn children have no place in a discussion on morality and the value of human life.

“The Bible teaches that abortion is acceptable if God performs it or he commands it to be done through contaminated water or by violent force.”

Well, look at it this way. It’s already been suggested that Sin and Suffering is allowed if God allows it to happen. Abortion is just another example of this rule in effect.

  2. Baconsbud Says:

These verses do suggest heavily that abortion is something that he is ok with. The verses that anti-abortionist use to claim he is against it have nothing to do with it as I have read them. I doubt most that are anti-abortion really know what the bible says but only know what they have been told it says.

  3. The Arbourist Says:

    Good post!

Using the bible in any sort of moral context is a chilling experience. It is a cruelly misanthropic testament to the brutality we as a species are capable of.

The bible and other associated magic books need to be left behind and rationality embraced. It is the 21st century, we need to put superstition behind us and embrace a reality based view of our existence.

  4. Janus Grayden Says:

Just like how genocide’s a no-no unless God tells you to do it.

  5. awfrick Says:

“You can be a pro-life supporter, but leave your Bible at home.”

Exactly. The Bible is far too fractured to build law and domestic policy upon.

  7. LeavingReligion Says:

It sounds like god is even okay with late term abortions and post birth killings.

  8. LeoPardus Says:

God’s definitely cool with infanticide. He used it himself. Remember the poor kid that was the first born of David and Bathsheba.
“Because of your sin, the child will die.”

Proof that the US Constitution wasn’t Divinely inspired. They were against Bills of Attainder.

    • Janus Grayden Says:

Mass infanticide, too. Let’s not forget the Canaanite babies, which God had murdered indirectly. Then there are the Egyptian babies that he took care of directly.

      Sickening.

  9. AllThingsToNoOne Says:

This is a great post. Interesting how the anti-choice crowd seems ignorant of these.

    • Reginald Selkirk Says:

They are not trolling the comments either, so perhaps they wish to maintain their ignorance.

    • Butterfly Says:

      OR…

They could be having a massive religious gathering in the Everglades or something. :D

      It’s just an idea… :D

    • The Arbourist Says:

That would presume that they have actually read the bible or were interested in actually debating charitably the issue at hand. To generalize, I would venture that the majority of people who use the bible or ‘biblical opinion’ are only good at spouting out the verses of their magic book that gives them their ‘required proof’ for their arguments.

I look no farther than Neil and his 4simpsons blog for an example of a pious pro-life troll that fits the above description.

      • Baconsbud Says:

I have to kind of disagree with your statement that they only know the select verses. I think they mainly know the verses they have been told they should know. I doubt many have actually read the bible themselves.

      • Paul M Says:

“I would venture that the majority of people who use the bible or ‘biblical opinion’ are only good at spouting out the verses of their magic book that gives them their ‘required proof’ for their arguments. ”

Same can be said for those who think that the Bible is nonsense. The Bible passages cited in the post, for example, are from Hebrew history and Hebrew Law. Are Christians, then, obliged to hold these as standards for acceptable behavior?

Ya gotta read the NT to find out…

        Try Matthew 22:34 – 40.

        • A chicken passeth by Says:

To be honest, the New Book is supposed to be a reinforcement for the Old Book… but.

Judging from responses like the above, all I see another Double Standard.

When quotes are pulled by non-believers from the Old Book, they are discounted as an argument by default, because all the right stuff is in the New Book, and we should be reading from *that* instead.

Yet modern Christianity and its branches are free to pull quotes from the old book, and write sermons based upon the stories within, without being criticized for doing so.

That’s not a very fair way to argue it, considering that most of the parables, lessons and teachings in the Old Book do not have a New Book equivalent. The Book Of Job is a prime example.

        • Janus Grayden Says:

So are you excusing God for demanding that pregnant women’s stomachs be torn open?

I’m sorry, I’m just failing to see how the Old/New Testament schism lets God off the hook for demanding that ANY babies be slaughtered.

If it does, am I entitled to that treatment? Can I hire a hitman to kill pregnant women by the scores and be absolved by telling the hitman to love his neighbor? Is that how this works?

        • Butterfly Says:

That coming from YOU, Paul M, is not ironic at all…

Let’s just imagine for a moment that God was in a joking mood when he “inspired” the Old Testament. Let us imagine that the Old Testament is just the biggest divine hoax in the entire history of humanity.

I don’t need to spell out the fact that the little water that the seven day creation holds would be instantly vaporized by that.

Either the Old Testament is the divine inspired word of God…or its not.

Either killing millions of unborn infants and their poor mothers is immoral , unnecessary genocide…or its not.

It doesn’t matter if God was talking to us in the OT. What he did, he did. Its not a question of whether he wants us to follow in his footsteps but more of if the path that he chose was right.

  10. LeoPardus Says:

I remember that back in my believing days, I always thought the Biblical case against abortion was weak. I remember being disappointed about that. As it ended up, my case against it was best supported by working in an anatomy lab run by an agnostic professor.

  11. James Says:

    Pleasant fellow that God is.

Well, to be honest… I’ll have to give him credit for being consistent. >_>

  13. Someone Says:

“God allows the pregnant women of Tappuah to be ripped open.

At that time Menahem, starting out from Tirzah, attacked Tiphsah and everyone in the city and its vicinity, because they refused to open their gates. He sacked Tiphsah and ripped open all the pregnant women.

    2 Kings 15:16″

this verse is not talking about GOD! It is talking about King Shallum of Israel.
    Read you Bible people.

    • John Says:

and it said GOD allows, not he did it himself.

      • theBEattitude Says:

Exactly. If God is so offended by the death of babies, he could do something about it. He is “all-powerful” after all. And don’t use the tired “free will” argument.

I have close friends and family that pray for healing, protection and safety for their loved ones. If a person has the free will to rip open pregnant women, why pray to God for protection? If humans are free to do whatever we want, and God does nothing to protect his believers, this faith in God is little more than wishful thinking for an afterlife in Christian paradise. He does nothing for you on earth except a warm fuzzy feeling when you pray and worship.

The big issue is how involved God is in the day to day occurrences in the Bible. Everything from raining food from heaven to feed the hungry, water from a rock to help the thirsty and parting a sea to escape enemies. Today occurrences and tragedies are completely random and usually unjust. Bad things happen to good people and good things happen to evil people every day. This God is not involved.
